Have a specific, rare, or unique species in mind? Let our Livestock Manager help you find it. We're dedicated to fulfilling your aquatic requests, whenever possible.

48 Hour warranty

We stand behind the health of our livestock with a 48-hour guarantee from the date of purchase (excludes items marked "no warranty").

If you experience any issues within this 48-hour window, please return the livestock to our store along with a separate water sample from your aquarium for testing. Provided your water parameters are suitable, we'll gladly offer a replacement or store credit. Please note that once livestock leaves our store, any returns will be for store credit only.

Our guarantee does not cover losses due to aggression from existing tank mates, fish jumping from your aquarium, or poor water quality in your tank.

For our ongoing monthly service customers, we extend this guarantee to 7 days from the date of livestock drop-in.

Aquatic Trade-Ins

To ensure a smooth process, we require that you make an appointment by email with the livestock manager before bringing in any livestock.

Any fish brought in without an email will be considered a donation.

Depending on our current capacity and needs, we may ask you to call back at a later date, or we would be happy to accept the livestock as a donation.

If we are able to offer store credit, the maximum amount provided will be the equivalent of one-third (1/3) of the current retail value, and this will be issued as store credit only.

The valuation of livestock is at the discretion of the Manager on Duty.

Please understand that we cannot offer credit for sick or visibly blemished fish.

Livestock Holds

To ensure the best health for all our aquatic life, we generally don't offer holds on livestock.

We encourage you to only purchase livestock that looks healthy and when your aquarium is fully ready for new inhabitants.

In very rare and extreme cases, for paid purchases only and due to limited space, we may be able to hold livestock for up to 48 hours.

The ability to hold is strictly at the discretion of the livestock manager. Please note that we
can never guarantee space and we only hold livestock in extreme cases

As a special benefit for our Dallas North Aquarium Service customers, we can hold livestock for you until your next scheduled service visit, as long as it's within 10 days.

Acclimation Procedure

Introducing new fish to a home aquarium is an exciting moment for any aquarist, but a careful and patient acclimation process is crucial for the health and survival of your new aquatic pets. Abrupt changes in water temperature and chemistry can cause significant stress, shock, and even death. This guide outlines the standard and most effective procedures for temperature acclimating your new fish.

The primary goal of acclimation is to gradually equalize the temperature of the water in the transport bag with the temperature of your aquarium water. This prevents temperature shock, a major stressor for fish. Following this, a slow introduction to the aquarium's specific water parameters is also essential.

Guidelines for New Aquariums

You now have an aquarium set up in your home or office. The success or failure of that aquarium can be determined by the next 6-8 weeks.

The first thing everyone involved with the aquarium must learn is patience. A new aquarium must “mature” into a balanced ecosystem for aquatic life.

Every aquarium goes through a biological process called the nitrogen cycle or “cycle period”. This occurs in both freshwater and marine aquariums. This cycle period usually takes from four to eight weeks after the initial introduction of fish.

We recommend letting the aquarium run for 24-48 hours with all filters, power heads, and heaters operational. This gives the filters and power heads opportunity to remove any debris or sediment from the aquarium. The heater will stabilize the water temperature before the introduction of fish. The water temperature should be between 76-80 degrees before adding fish. You will want to stay within certain guidelines for the “starter” fish. Our knowledgeable sales staff can help you decide what fish are best suited for your aquarium.

It is not uncommon for you to lose some fish during the cycle period, so you will need to have a fish net to remove any losses. Our staff can help you determine the hardiest and most economical fish to use as “starter fish.”

Your aquarium may be cloudy in the first week. This is not unusual and usually clears up in a week or two. There are several products such as turbo start that can drastically decrease the time it takes to cycle an aquarium. See your sales associate for details.

After your aquarium has been established with fish for at least 4 weeks, bring us a sample of water for a free analysis. We will test the water to see if the cycle is completed. Once the aquarium has cycled, you can slowly add your choice of fish.
